Stuwa® Flap Rudder

The Stuwa® flap rudder consists of two rudder parts connected by a hinge: the main rudder and the streamlined, hinged flap. The special feature of this rudder is the flap. It provides a large transverse force with a small main rudder deflection.

This results in excellent manoeuvrability. Minimal water resistance creates optimum propulsion efficiency!

Ingenious operation

Turning the main rudder using the rudder stock automatically controls the flap via a mechanical transmission. This gives the flowing water twice the deflection of the main rudder! As a result, the main rudder and the flap together form a strongly curved 'aerofoil'. This creates an extra 'lift effect' due to the fast-flowing propeller water.

Because the flap responds immediately, only an angle rotation of one to two degrees is required for small course corrections. And thanks to the double water deflection, the rudder immediately transmits the desired direction to the entire ship.

The Stuwa® flap rudder is suitable for every type of vessel. This type of rudder is frequently used in inland shipping, maritime shipping and yacht building. Its steering and speed efficiency is considerably higher than that of a 'standard rudder'. So much so that, despite periodic maintenance of the flap, your investment will be more than recouped.
