The inland shipping industry is where the origins of De Waal lie. The 1930s and ’40s were mostly spent building engines into sailing barges, but today’s inland shipping is a different industry altogether. The traditional ships of yesteryear have been replaced by massive river barges stretching up to 110 or 135 metres and even more.

De Waal has grown with the industry, adding quays, machinery and workshops. The world has changed, and these days the quays are regularly occupied by four, five or even more river barges at a time. The times may be changing, but we embrace the future.

Constant innovation and high investment levels enable us to adapt to the ever growing demand for sustainable and energy-friendly solutions. Take our propeller shaft seal system, for example, which we developed in the 1980s. We have since supplied thousands of these systems, and from 2015 they are even compulsory in all vessels. This is what innovation is all about, always looking ahead for new solutions and improvements. In 2014 we introduced our latest rudder profile, Easyflow. It saves 10% or more in fuel costs. That is what sustainability is all about. Inland shipping, it is in our DNA.
