The triple rudder system always consists of three rudders per propeller. Two virtually identical, mirrored outer rudders and a relatively small, short centre rudder between them. Placing three rudders behind a single propeller improves efficiency and manoeuvrability.
The small, short centre rudder acts as a kind of 'spoiler' and removes the 'twist' from the propeller water. This gives the water jet more power. In combination with the relatively wide outer rudders, there is practically no resistance when sailing straight ahead, resulting in optimum efficiency. The carefully calculated position of the centre rudder ensures the best result. Better steering, less fuel and time savings.
In combination with our accompanying Triple steering gear®, you get one of the best steering systems in shipping. When steering, a small rudder deflection of the centre rudder already causes a considerable bending of the propeller water. The main rudders then hardly move at all and cause virtually no resistance. When steering further, the centre rudder smoothly transfers the propeller water to the outer rudders. The rudders are practically aligned with each other, so that the water is pushed aside effectively. The result: excellent steering behaviour.
In consultation with you, we select the optimal blade profile for the outer rudders. Balance rudders, dynamic rudders, or our latest easyflow profile. There are many possibilities at De Waal.
