Ingenious in simplicity
An exterior seal consists of several bronze sealing rings, each featuring a cavity containing an elastic, V-shaped sealing ring. These elastic rings rotate with the propeller shaft and provide an axial seal against the bronze sealing ring. Depending on the direction in which the sealing rings face, the system works to either keep water out or lubricant in. Outside seals usually contain two sealing rings that are positioned to keep in oil or grease, with the other rings working to keep out water. In many cases a special type of lip seal is used for added protection.
To provide the best possible protection for your propeller shaft and to maximise seal life, the propeller shaft is fitted with a thin-walled bronze wearing bush which prevents shaft wear in the event of a slipping sealing ring. It also prevents corrosion under the rings. The bush is easy to replace.
For inland shipping as well as seagoing vessels
We supply our exterior seals on all markets. They are familiar products at all inland shipyards. And our brand is growing quickly in the seagoing sector. You are welcome to challenge us!
For your new ship
For new ships, our design office takes the ship’s hull design and adds an optimised propeller shaft system with sufficient space to accommodate our seal system. Any contact between the water outside and the steel propeller shaft is completely avoided, as the seal continues right up to the propeller. This means that any corrosive action of exterior water on the propeller shaft is eliminated. What you get is a custom-made state-of-the-art seal system optimised for your ship. It doesn’t come any better.

For your existing ship
Are you looking to fit an exterior seal in addition to an interior seal on your current vessel? Don’t hesitate to contact us for advice. The available space just in front of the propeller, where it connects to the propeller shaft, determines whether an exterior seal can be fitted. If necessary we can make a special, compact version for you, but if there really isn’t enough room, we will tell you so. You should take into account that for closed lubrication, any existing grease-lubricated system is best converted to liquid grease or oil lubrication. We will make the necessary bearing alterations for you, rework your propeller shaft, and fit the shaft with a wearing bush. For correct lubrication we will fit an oil suppletion reservoir, or we will install an integrated lubricant pumping system. And there is always the option of converting to water lubrication, of course. Finally, we will fit your new exterior seal to make sure you can operate sustainably with minimal impact on the environment, safe in the knowledge that your vessel meets the latest ROSR regulations.
Compatibility
You may like to know that our exterior seals are fully compatible with other well-known brands of seals. If you are in any way dissatisfied with your current make of seal, give us a ring. We will be happy to fit an original Stuwa® seal for you. Many ships have already benefitted from a refit! Ultimately, you will always be the wiser for it, with less maintenance and fewer expensive replacement parts. Guaranteed.
