Periodical inspections, all-round safety

One of the tasks of our service department is the inspection of various installations. Think steering machines and deck cranes, machines which Dutch legislators consider sufficiently important for your safety and the safety of others to require them to be inspected at regular intervals.

IVR steering machine inspections

De Waal is fully compliant with all the quality criteria defined by the independent body IVR for inspecting steering machines. Following an in-depth internal review of our company, in 2008 IVR issued the official certificate of quality assurance to De Waal. Since then, De Waal has been inspecting and certifying every make of steering machine on the market in accordance with uniform standards. We are qualified to issue a Steering Machine Inspection Certificate on behalf of IVR. This certificate is proof of your compliance with the statutory triennial inspection requirement. The certificate also forms a major part of the damage prevention inspection. If the damage prevention requirements (of which steering machine approval is a major item) are met, the ship’s owner receives the Proof of Damage Prevention Inspection from the IVR-authorised expert. This is an important document developed at the initiative of insurers.

Changes in steering machine regulations

There are still a few around, steering machines of mostly older ships that are not up to modern standards. In April 2007 a new law based on the inspection regulations for Rhine barges was passed for newly constructed ships, which in addition to the statutory steering machine inspection also set standards regarding the technical design of the machine. Since 2010 the law also applies to existing ships that are up for a new inspection certificate.

Innovative steering machine technology

De Waal has always been at the forefront of innovative steering machine technology. Our fully redundant piping system for example has now become the industry standard. We will be happy to help you modify your steering machine to make it compliant with current legislation. We will look at your system, make an estimate, do the modifications, and make a trial run together with you. This is how we make sure we deliver only the best possible quality, so you continue your business with a new inspection certificate. It feels good to feel safe.

Car crane inspections

Being a manufacturer of deck cranes we know what we are talking about. Hoisting must be a safe process. After all, there are people involved operating the machinery. And that goes hand in hand with risks. However, if your crane complies with our rigorous standards and gets its regular checkups, there is no need to worry about the technology.

Every new crane is installed by our company and then expertly tested and certified by an external inspection agency (e.g. AIB Vinçotte). We issue you with a bright yellow crane log book and place our stamp in it. From this point onwards the crane is your responsibility. Every calendar year an expert must be called in to check the crane and record any maintenance in the crane log book. Every 10 years an accredited company must give the crane a technical check and a formal inspection and get approval from an inspection agency. Only then has Dutch legislation been complied with. At any moment in the meantime you may be spot checked at the risk of a fine for non-compliance. De Waal is fully accredited. We also offer regular maintenance contracts.
