Stuwa® high-speed rudders

For use on super yachts, De Waal usually specifies rudders with a Naca cross-section. A scientifically proven design, it originates from aeronautics. We will build the best possible rudder for your yacht. Excellent control, designed for high speeds.

Naca explained

N.A.C.A. stands for National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Originally an American federal agency, it was founded in 1915 to conduct research into aerofoils. The scientifically underpinned aerofoils were later adapted for use in ship's rudders and jet pipes. In 1958 Naca was closed down to be partially transferred to what today is Nasa.

Rudder dynamics

The Naca rudder section stands out due to its relative thick leading edge, which smoothly curves to the thin trailing edge. These rudders are mostly constructed in a spade shape. On request the rudder stock can be made detachable, as in our Pacific type of rudder, for example. For optimal water displacement we will top the rudder with a sleek streamlined head box. A feast for the eyes as well!

Ultimate yachting rudder

As it is in aeronautics, so in yachting too the cross-section of your rudder forms the basis of the controllability of your ship, in particular at high speeds. On the other hand, a rudder also creates drag in the water. This varies with the angle at which the water hits the rudder and the speed at which the ship is moving. This is why for fast yachts, the engineers at De Waal like to use the Naca cross-section as a basis for the design. In combination with other typical De Waal properties, a unique yacht rudder is created. Even Apple leader Steve Jobs was impressed.
