A fresh look at maritime technology
Over the years De Waal has introduced a number of innovations. Our innovations were not only far ahead of their time, they were also expertly designed with much attention to ease of use.
These days our R&D department includes several academically trained engineers whose daily work it is to see how things can be made better, smarter and more cost-effective. This ensures that De Waal can always stay one step ahead.
A selection of our innovations:
- 1938 – development of side propulsion for sailing barges
- 1972 – first hydraulic ship lift in the Netherlands
- 1980 – environmentally friendly prop shaft seal, made to measure

- 1985 – introduction of proportionally controlled steering machine pump
- 1987 – introduction of standard redundant piping system on all steering machines
- 1990 – 100% crack-free rudder blade/innovative rudder-stock construction
- 1995 – construction of second, unique, covered ship lift
- 2000 – development of adjustable 3-point prop shaft bearing
- 2005 – introduction of innovative three-rudder system
- 2010 – introduction of worldwide unique, removable Pacific rudder construction
- 2012 – plug & play deck crane design with fully concealed mechanism
- 2013 – touchscreen control panel with iPhone-like interface, Hybrid Touch
- 2013 – delivery of super yacht rudders to Apple CEO Steve Jobs
- 2014 – revolutionary fuel-saving rudder system, Easyflow®
